West End Quay

location: West End Quay, Paddington Basin, London
client: West End City Ltd
architect: Broadway Malyan
main contractor: Wates Construction Ltd
project scope: Curtain Walling, Windows

Situated alongside this exquisite waterside area, the West End Quay project comprised two large residential blocks of luxury apartments forming part of the wider redevelopment of the Paddington Basin.

This grand residential development looks out over the basin itself making the quality and performance of the glazing of utmost importance.

On the northerly aspect, overlooking the basin the glazing area was maximised utilising a full height Hueck VF50 aluminium curtain system, Series 1.0 tilt/turn window inserts and Series 2.1 dual leaf lift and slide doors giving a superior weather rating than a traditional patio door.

The curtain wall areas were silicone pointed to the vertical mullions whilst a 100mm projection aerofoil capping was utilised on the horizontal transoms.

The supports to the Juliet balconies were designed as an integral part of the wall with all components being polyester powder coated.

The southerly aspect had less glazing but the same high performance systems were utilised. Double glazed units incorporating toughened, soft coat high performance low E glass were used across the development with insulated graphite enamelled and insulated glass spandrels incorporated at floor slab locations.

On the upper floors complex interfaces of structure, roofing, re-cast cladding, bull-nose aluminium cladding and curtain walling were evident. EAG used their powerful BoCAD 3D design software to model the junctions and identify potential problem areas at an early stage.

Valued at over £5 million, the sub contract ranks among the largest residential projects EAG have completed.
