The latest extension to the Docklands Light Railway now links Canary Wharf to the City Airport, and forms part of the vital regeneration work taking place in London’s East End in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
The London City Airport station is the hub of the post millennium DLR development, where to deal with the high number of expected passengers, the viaduct splits in two allowing the station to rise up between the tracks and provide a single 8m central platform.
Examples of EAG’s work can be seen in all areas of the station with the largest elements being on the central platform, which is fully enclosed by a bespoke structurally silicone glazed panelised system, to both the glazed facetted walls and overhead rooflight, using laminated glasses from 13.5 mm to 25.5 mm to accommodate the specified loads for this sensitive area.
The two stair entrances to the platforms are enclosed using Schuco FW60+ curtain walling, are connected by escalators and lifts to an intermediate level with a direct link into the Airport concourse to facilitate easy access for passengers to the arrivals and departure areas of the airport.
EAG commenced work on site in May 2005, achieving project completion to programme in November 2005, despite client changes in the loading specification part way through the design process. In addition to structurally glazed curtain walling and roof glazing EAG’s scope included cladding, doors, louvres and auto bi-parting sliding doors to the airport’s new main entrance.
