Following a brief initial tender process for the package, EAG worked closely with contractor Walter Lilly and architect NBBJ, to engineer this complex envelope package to a level that met with the client’s requirements and allowed the project as a whole to proceed.
The main facades presented a considerable weathering challenge, as numerous products including several hundred square metres of cast glass planks which where to be framed and then incorporated into the design. To complicate matters still further the plane of the façade was articulated in and out as the material of each panels changed. Control of the complex water drainage management was key to the success of this design.
A bespoke extrusion over 500mm in girth was produced to give the required feature at each floor level, to a quality that could not have been realised with a sheet metal pressing. The base grid for the main facades comprised Schuco FW50+ with 9 different glazing specification including 4 differing frit patterns incorporated to comply with the architectural requirement.
In addition structurally glazed curtain walling was used to the atria end wall accommodating pane sizes of 1500m x 4200m within the design. Open smoke vents actuated from the BMS were also incorporated within this façade, which lead into a high level atria roof of complex design in many planes, again requiring a structurally glazed solution.
Large areas of insulated and non-insulated powder coated metal cladding completed the envelope package of this complex biology laboratory building, for the King's College Hospital, London.
