EAG receives accolade from Gordon Brown

Royal Alexandra Hospital for ChildrenEnglish Architectural Glazing supplied and fitted the glazing and cladding for the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital that has won the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.

A Suffolk glazing company has been given the seal of approval by Gordon Brown after its cladding work on a state-of-the-art children's hospital was named as Britain's best public building.

English Architectural Glazing (EAG), based in Mildenhall, supplied and fitted the glazing and cladding for the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, in Brighton, East Sussex.

Locally known simply as 'the Alex', the hospital is one of only seven hospitals dedicated to paediatric care in the UK.

It was chosen from a 21-strong shortlist to win the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.

EAG's Pre-Construction Director, Edward Whipp, said: "This was a technically challenging project involving the use of a number of hi-tech materials and innovative technologies to clad the entire building".

"We are delighted that the hospital has won this award and pleased to have contributed to its success".

The GBP37m hospital, commissioned by the Brighton and Sussex Hospital Trust, was designed by Building Design Partnership and built by Kajima Partnerships.

Judges praised the hospital for its nautical theme with white concrete panels and bright bands of colour.

Built in the shape of an ark, the hospital uses light and colour to create a bright and cheerful atmosphere.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, said: "This is an outstanding achievement and I congratulate everyone involved in building the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, from design through to construction".

"This award showcases what can be achieved when high-quality design is coupled with highly effective delivery".

"I hope that the Alex will prove to be an inspiration to other planners, developers and architects".

EAG has contributed to a number of award winning projects this year, including the Westminster Academy which was shortlists for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

The company also won plaudits in the RIBA National Award for Architecture 2008 and the Light and Architecture Design Awards 2008.
