EAG nears completion on London School of Economics contract

London School of EconomicsWork by English Architectural Glazing Ltd (EAG) on its £1.1m project to install glazing and external cladding elements to the £32m New Academic Building for the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is nearing completion.

EAG is installing unitised curtain walling, glazed doors, rainscreen cladding and louvres as well as a fully glazed atrium roof to the 12,700m2 building. The work will allow natural light to filter through into the rooms below.

As the unitised curtain walling and other features are being fitted, Edward Whipp, Pre-Construction Director at EAG, said: “This is a challenging project as we have to work with limited access due to the glazing’s central location within an enclosed well. However, unitised curtain walling with the glass factory bonded into the frames allows the units to be craned directly off the trailer and onto the building. We’re bang on schedule.”

The project, which is being led by contractor Osborne and design architect Grimshaw, involves a complete remodeling of the existing building situated at 24 Kingsway in the West End – formerly the Public Trust Office – which was built around 1912.

The building is an eight-storey, U-shaped structure. The plans incorporate an atrium, roof pavilion and a revamped central courtyard. Once completed it will provide three new lecture theatres, 18 classrooms, research facilities and academic offices on the upper floors and will provide capacity for a further 2,500 students.

The New Academic Building will ease overcrowding in the centre of the campus and enable departments with similar academic interests to come together.
