Scientific gem will regain its sparkle

English Architectural Glazing (EAG) has secured a contract worth nearly £900,000 from ISG to work on an extensive development programme at The Royal Institution of Great Britain in London’s West End.

EAG will install bolted glazing to multiple locations as part of an extensive ongoing expansion and refurbishment programme at what is one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific establishments in the world.

The Grade I listed building in Albemarle Street has observed 14 of its resident scientists receive the Nobel Prize and has witnessed the discovery of 10 of the chemical elements.

Using funding from the Heritage Lottery and major donations from private individuals and bodies the development programme will upgrade and renovate the building and create more accessible areas for the public and the Institution’s members.

Such developments will include the complete transformation of the basement areas, the introduction of a dedicated restaurant/café area, a modern, interactive museum and more rooms that will be open to the public and members.

Architect Terry Farrell & Partners and main contractor ISG have carefully scheduled work with subcontractors such as EAG since the project began in 2005 to ensure that the Institute remains operational during the construction works.

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2008.
