India connection for UK’s latest glazing invention

System STAXA leading UK glazing and curtain walling firm has just tasted the delights of India after securing production of its revolutionary invention that will transform the industry.

English Architectural Glazing, based in Suffolk, has developed The STAX System, a clamp device that holds glass panels in place without the need for drilling holes and using bolts.

The STAX System is being produced in India by a company called Intricast, ready for shipmentshipment to the UK. Simon Gladwin and Steve Donnelly from EAG recently visited the country to see the first batch of STAX roll off the production line.

EAG has developed the new design over the past 18 months. The STAX System will deliver the benefits of a highly translucent glass skin whilst avoiding the complication and expense of drilling holes through glass. The structural design premise is that the dead load of each unit of glass is transferred through the unit below to the lowest level, and that only the wind load is accommodated at each floor level. Settlement and differential movement in the concrete or steel frame of the building is accommodated in the cast stainless steel glazing bracket, as is a facility to amend the line of the glazing by rotating the threaded “T” branch of the bracket assembly.

The design allows pane sizes of 1.5m x 3.5m with intermediate support provided by tensioned cables, glass fins or secondary steel work. The glass units are clamped at six locations with a two part stainless steel casting available in a variety of finishes. As there is no need to drill the glass, standard double glazed units with silicone edge seals can be used from any manufacturer so any coating or product, providing it’s applied to the correct substrate glass, can be incorporated.

EAG Managing Director, Simon Gladwin, said: “I was very impressed by the standard of work of the company in India. They have proved to be very successful partners for us. STAX will be an industry leader and will become an essential piece of equipment for anyone in the glazing and curtain walling business.”

The first clamps for the STAX System will arrive in the UK in the next few weeks. The first project EAG will be use STAX on will be Camden Lock Market, in London, later in the year.
